'Kushalnagar Works', set
up in 1949 by Tata Coffee, is a coffee curing
unit located at Kudige in Kodagu District.
Kushalnagar Works was
established with a moderate curing capacity
and over a period of time has grown with
the increase in the production of coffee.
Spread over 67 acres, the unit has a factory
and residential areas where housing is provided
for all the company employees.
This unit caters to the
coffee curing of not just Tata Coffee's
own coffee production, but also to that
of private coffee planters, export houses
and coffee traders. The factory also has
a roasting and grinding unit
In 1992, when the marketing
of coffee was liberalised, the curing and
marketing requirements of coffee growers
changed. Simultaneously, the requirements
of green coffee buyers changed as well,
with additional emphasis being laid on new
grades and stringent quality specifications.
To meet the changing necessities, in 1997,
a new line of state-of-the-art machinery
was imported from Pinhalense, Brazil. Curing
about four metric tonnes of coffee an hour,
these machines enhanced the curing capacity
of unit to 20000 metric tons per annum.
In keeping with Tata's
commitment to quality, a battery of the
latest 'Electronic Colour Sorting Machine'
was installed online to ensure that the
final grades of coffee are totally defect-free,
resulting in the final product meeting international
standards.
To meet the export demands,
the unit also has its own in-house 'Container
Bulk Loading System' where the product is
packed and sealed before leaving the unit
thereby securing the freshness of the coffee.
There is also a modern coffee quality laboratory
in the unit, manned by personnel who are
experts in coffee tasting and certification.
This laboratory is accredited to The Coffee
Board of India and is authorised to certify
the quality of coffee exported worldwide.
Kushalnagar Works
is one of the first curing works in India
to be awarded the coveted ISO 9001:2000
Certification, with every operation being
tracked through a unique SQL based software
and MIS to keep the database updated. This
only reiterates Tata's efforts of constantly
striving to add value to their products
and operations.
