It was not by way of contingent
occurrence that Tata Coffee produces some
of the finest coffee. Working with nature's
choicest gifts in the form of rich soils,
luxuriant tropical shade cover, abundant
rainfall and sunshine combined with good
cultivation, processing and handling expertise,
all together synergise to create quality
coffee (Arabicas and Robustas). This makes
for an irresistible cup which discerning
consumers around the world savour and kick-start
their day - with a hot cuppa of Tata Coffee.
Tata Coffee is involved
in the whole spectrum of coffee making process.
A constant quest for quality starts right
from growing and curing coffee and tea to
manufacturing and marketing value added
coffee and tea products. Coffee beans are
hand picked at just the right stage from
home-grown estates, cured at their own facilities
and are exported or retailed under their
own brands in the domestic market.
Monsoon Malabar, Mysore
Nugget Extra Bold and Robusta Kappi Royale
are three prominent specialty Indian coffees
grown and processed apart from some estate
specific coffee beans. International Tata
Café, Mysore Gold and Malabar are
the popular instant coffee brands that are
exported.
Apart from growing coffee
and tea, inter-crops like Pepper
and Cardamom
are also grown on the estates. Tata coffee
produces about 1000 mt of Pepper accounting
for 1.5 per cent of India's total Pepper
production, making the company the single
largest producer of pepper in the country.
Tata is the leading exporter of White Pepper
while a sizeable quantity of Black Pepper
also reaches the export markets.
Tata Coffee has total
dedication and commitment to conserving
and preserving the delicate ecology and
bio diversity. Towards this, it is one of
the few plantation companies in the world
who grow trees to replace the ones that
have been felled for timber, in a perpetually
sustainable cycle. Trees grown as shade
for coffee saplings are cut only when other
trees are ready to take its place. The company
takes special care to see that every tree
felled is replaced through replanting. Tata
Coffee's timber resources on the estate
include Rosewood, Silver Oak and other softwood
trees. As a part of its plan to optimise
the utilisation of these resources, Tata
has entered into the Timber Value-Addition
industry by converting Silver Oak trees
into plywood of different types under the
brand name 'Conswood'.
Tata coffee also deals
in plantation requirements such as fertilisers
and chemicals, estate implements, tires
and tubes through the estate
supply division, thus dealing with the
entire range of coffee making process.
The numerous awards
won by Tata Coffee at various quality competitions
stand testimony to the company's commitment
to quality. In 2004 Kenneth
Davids, coffee taster based in Berkeley,
California created a portfolio of India's
ten best coffees. Of the ten coffees, six
coffees belong to Tata estates. To be more
specific, four of five Arabica estates were
from Tata estates and two of five Robusta
estates were Tata estates.
