Tata Coffee Limited is
the largest integrated coffee plantation
in the world with nineteen estates spread
over prime coffee growing land in South
India, producing approximately 10,000 metric
tonnes of coffee - Arabicas and Robustas
- in both washed and unwashed forms. Tata
Coffee's strength lies in its ability to
supply large quantities of single estate
and strain specific coffees round the year.
The entire chain of production
- from growing to processing to milling
- is handled at Tata Coffee's own facilities.
As the entire chain from coffee bush to
cup is controlled by Tata, stringent quality
standards are enforced.
Tata, working hand in
hand with nature, produces coffees that
are entirely shade grown and sun dried,
resulting in some of the finest coffees
of India. Even the effluents are treated
bio-enzymically and recycled before being
released back into the environment.
At the estate level, multiple
rounds of picking are carried out to ensure
that only fully ripe cherries are picked.
Meticulous care is taken during the pulping
and fermentation process. The number of
hours of soaking required varies from estate
to estate and this is based on altitude
and temperature at each estate, prescribed
by Tata's R
& D laboratory after research.
The washed coffees are
then transported to Tata's own dry milling
(curing works) facility called Kushalnagar
Works. Coffee is stored and milled separately
for each estate, thus maintaining the estate
identity of the coffee and ensuring traceability
to the estate. Further, each estate's coffee
is cupped and rated according to the cup
profile at our independent accredited Quality
Lab.

The various strains of
coffee grown at varying altitudes under
different soil and temperature conditions
makes each estate's coffee very different
from each other. The range of taste and
flavour profiles vary from chocolaty to
ginger to fruit notes; from mildly acidic
to highly acidic. Discerning speciality
coffee buyers thus have a very wide range
to choose from.
The latest infrastructure
in terms of processing machinery such as
Pinhalense of Brazil, Elexso Electronic
Colour Sorters, in-house container bulk
loading system, etc. coupled with high service
standards makes it easy for buyers to work
with Tata. It is a one-stop shop to fulfil
all their requirements.
The numerous awards
won by Tata Coffee at various Quality competitions
stand testimony to our Commitment to Quality.
In 2004 Kenneth
Davids, coffee taster based in Berkeley,
California created a portfolio of India's
10 Best Coffees. Of the ten, 6 were coffees
belonging to Tata estates. To be more specific,
4 out of 5 Arabica estates were Tata estates
and 2 of out 5 Robusta estates were Tata
estates.
